In short: RIP software turns a finished image into instructions for the printer: how much of each ink, where the white goes, how the colours are managed. A gang sheet builder works before that: it collects the designs, fixes the files, arranges them on a sheet and produces the one print-ready image the RIP prints. Most DTF shops need a RIP. Shops that print customer artwork, or sell gang sheets online, also need a builder.
What RIP software does
RIP stands for raster image processor. In DTF, the RIP sits between your files and your printer and handles:
- The white underbase. It generates the white ink layer behind the colours, with settings for density and choke.
- Colour management. ICC profiles that turn RGB files into the right mix of CMYK inks for your printer and film.
- Ink limits and print modes. How much ink goes down, in how many passes.
- Printer control. Queuing jobs, nesting files on the roll, and talking to the printer itself.
Common DTF RIPs include CADlink Digital Factory DTF Edition, AcroRIP, Flexi, NeoStampa and the RIPs bundled with specific printers. Which one you need depends mostly on your printer: a converted Epson desktop printer, an XP-15000 or an L1800, and a production DTF machine all have different supported options.
What a gang sheet builder does
A gang sheet builder handles everything that happens before the RIP:
- Collecting artwork from customers, often through your website or Shopify store.
- Checking each file: resolution at print size, transparency, edges, thin lines.
- Fixing files. This is where builders differ the most. Most only warn; PrintReadySheets repairs the file (upscaling, line thickening, edge and background cleanup).
- Layout. Placing designs at the right size, auto-filling the sheet, spacing and rotation.
- Producing the sheet: one 300 DPI PNG with a transparent background, ready for the RIP.
- Selling. On a store, the builder is also how the customer orders and pays for the sheet.
Do you need both?
| Your situation | RIP | Gang sheet builder |
|---|---|---|
| You print your own designs on your own printer | Yes | Optional, saves layout time |
| You print customer artwork | Yes | Yes, to check and fix files before they cost you film |
| You sell gang sheets online | Yes | Yes, it is the product page |
| You order DTF transfers from a supplier | No | Useful to prepare files and sheets |
| You resell transfers printed elsewhere | No | Yes, to collect orders and files |
The RIP's nesting feature can arrange files on the roll, but it assumes the files are already correct. It does not tell a customer their logo is 72 DPI, and it does not fix it. That work lands on whoever does prepress.
Where most time is lost
In a typical DTF shop, the printer is rarely the bottleneck. Prepress is: opening customer files, finding out they are too small, have a white background or a glow, emailing the customer, waiting, and building the sheet by hand. A builder that only flags problems moves that work to the customer and your inbox. A builder that fixes files removes most of it.
That is why we built PrintReadySheets as the step before your RIP: the sheet that reaches the RIP is already print-ready, so the RIP can do what it is good at.
Choosing DTF software
When you compare RIP software, look at:
- Support for your printer model and ink set.
- White underbase and choke controls.
- ICC profiles for your film and inks.
- Price model: one-time licence, subscription, or bundled.
- Mac support, if you need it. Several DTF RIPs are Windows-only.
When you compare gang sheet builders, look at:
- Whether it fixes files or only warns. See our comparison of gang sheet builder apps.
- Pricing: flat monthly or a percentage of every order.
- Whether it runs on your store (Shopify) and also standalone.
- The output: 300 DPI PNG with real transparency.
Frequently asked questions
What software do I need for DTF printing?
A RIP to drive the printer and manage the white layer and colours. If you print customer artwork or sell gang sheets, a gang sheet builder to collect, check, fix and arrange files before the RIP.
Is there free DTF RIP software?
Some printers come with a bundled RIP, and some RIPs have trial versions. Fully free, production-grade DTF RIPs are rare. Check what your printer's supplier includes.
Can a gang sheet builder replace RIP software?
No. A builder produces the print-ready sheet; the RIP still has to turn it into ink. They work together.
Is there DTF RIP software for Mac?
A few options support macOS, but many DTF RIPs are Windows-only. A browser-based gang sheet builder like PrintReadySheets runs on any computer, including Macs.
