How to price DTF gang sheets

How DTF shops price gang sheets: cost per square inch, film, ink and powder, labour, software fees and margins, with a worked example and the mistakes that eat profit.

In short: work out your cost per square inch (film, ink, powder, energy, labour and software), multiply by the sheet area, then set a price that covers that cost two to three times over. Watch two costs that are easy to forget: time spent fixing customer files, and software that takes a percentage of every order.

The costs in a gang sheet

Every sheet has the same cost components. Work them out per square inch (or per square metre in Europe), because that is how they scale with sheet length.

CostHow to calculate it
FilmRoll price ÷ roll area
Ink (CMYK + white)Ink cost per ml × ml used per square inch; your RIP's ink estimate helps
Adhesive powderPowder price per kg ÷ area it covers
Energy and maintenanceMonthly running costs ÷ square inches printed
LabourMinutes per sheet × hourly cost, including prepress, cutting and packing
SoftwareMonthly fees ÷ sheets per month, or the percentage per order
Waste and reprintsA realistic percentage of all the above

Prices for film, ink and powder vary by supplier and region and change often, so use your own invoices rather than a number from the internet.

A worked example

Assume your material and running costs come to a certain amount per square inch, call it c. A 22 × 24 inch sheet is 528 square inches, so its direct cost is 528 × c. If a 22 × 60 inch sheet is 1,320 square inches, its direct cost is 1,320 × c.

Then add labour. If prepress, printing supervision, cutting and packing take 10 minutes on a straightforward sheet at €30 / $30 an hour, that is €5 / $5 per sheet. If a customer's file needs fixing by hand, it can easily take 20 to 30 minutes more, which on a small sheet can be more than the materials.

Finally, add the margin. Many shops aim to price at two to three times the total cost, then check the result against what local competitors charge.

Pricing models shops use

  • Fixed lengths (22 × 12, 22 × 24, 22 × 60 and so on), with the price per inch dropping as sheets get longer. Easiest for customers to understand.
  • Per inch or per foot of length, with a minimum. Fair, and simple to compute in a builder.
  • Per square metre or per centimetre, common in Europe.
  • Rush fees for same-day or next-day printing.
  • Volume tiers for repeat customers.

Whatever model you use, show the price before the customer uploads files. A builder that calculates it live as they add designs reduces abandoned carts.

The two costs that eat margin

Fixing customer files

Low-resolution logos, white backgrounds, glows and hairlines are the norm, not the exception. Every file someone in your shop fixes by hand, or emails back to the customer, costs labour and delays the order. Shops underestimate this because it is spread across the day.

A builder that only warns customers moves the problem to your inbox. A builder that fixes files, like PrintReadySheets, removes most of the work: thin lines are thickened, edges and backgrounds cleaned and low-resolution art upscaled before the sheet reaches you.

Percentage-based software fees

Many gang sheet apps on Shopify charge a percentage of every gang sheet order, typically 3 to 5% with a cap per order. That feels small at first and grows with your revenue.

Example: at 2,000 orders a month with an average sheet price of $30, a 5% fee capped at $12 per order costs $1.50 per order, so $3,000 a month. PrintReadySheets is a flat €79 / $79 a month, with no commission and no fee per sheet, whatever your volume.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I charge for a DTF gang sheet?

Enough to cover your cost per square inch, labour and software two to three times over. Prices vary a lot by region and service level, so check what shops near you charge for the same lengths.

How do you calculate DTF printing cost?

Add up film, ink, powder, energy, labour and software per square inch (or square metre), then multiply by the sheet area. Use your own supplier invoices for the material costs.

Should gang sheets be priced per inch or per sheet?

Both work. Fixed sheet sizes are easier for new customers; per-inch pricing is fairer for odd lengths. Many shops offer fixed sizes with a per-inch option for long sheets.

Do gang sheet builder apps take a commission?

Many Shopify gang sheet apps charge 3 to 5% per order, often with a cap. PrintReadySheets charges a flat monthly price with no commission.
