How to make a gang sheet in Canva

Step-by-step: make a DTF gang sheet in Canva with a custom size, a transparent PNG and the right spacing, plus the resolution and edge problems Canva will not warn you about.

In short: create a custom design in inches at your sheet size, place your PNG designs at their print sizes with a quarter-inch gap, and download as PNG with a transparent background (a Canva Pro feature). Canva does not show the effective resolution of your images or catch soft edges, so check every file first.

What you need

  • Canva Pro (or Teams), for the transparent background download. Without it, every sheet gets a white background, which DTF prints.
  • Your designs as PNG files with transparent backgrounds, as large as possible.
  • Your sheet size, for example 22 × 24 inches.

Step by step

  1. Create a design with custom size. Choose inches and enter your sheet size, such as 22 × 24.
  2. Delete the white background. Click the page and remove the background colour, or leave it; you will turn on transparency at download.
  3. Upload your designs and drag them onto the page.
  4. Set each design to its print size. Select it and use Position to set the width in inches: about 3.5 to 4 inches for a left-chest logo, 10 to 12 inches for a full front.
  5. Space them out. Leave about 0.25 inch between designs and from the left and right edges. Canva's rulers and guides (File, View settings) help.
  6. Duplicate designs you need more than once (Ctrl/Cmd + D).
  7. Download. Share, Download, file type PNG, tick "Transparent background", and set the size slider to the maximum.

Check your export

Open the downloaded PNG in an image editor or upload it to FileFixxr:

  • Pixel size. A 22 inch wide sheet at 300 DPI should be 6,600 pixels wide. Canva caps export sizes, so for large or long sheets you may get less than 300 DPI. Check before you send it.
  • Background. It should be transparent, not white.
  • Edges. Images with soft edges, shadows or glows will print with a white halo.

The limits of Canva for gang sheets

Canva is a great design tool. It is not a prepress tool, and for gang sheets that shows:

What you needCanvaA gang sheet builder
True print size in inchesYesYes
Effective DPI per designNoYes
Warnings for low resolutionNoYes
Fixes for low resolution, thin lines, edgesNoPrintReadySheets: yes
Auto-fill to pack the sheetNoYes

The biggest risk is resolution. If you put a 500 pixel logo on a Canva page and stretch it to 10 inches, Canva shows it happily. On the shirt it is 50 DPI.

When to use a gang sheet builder instead

Canva works for an occasional sheet with your own, high-quality artwork. If you make sheets every week, print customer files, or sell gang sheets, a builder saves time and reprints. PrintReadySheets packs the sheet for you, checks each design at its print size, and fixes the problems Canva lets through. It has a 14-day free trial, no card required.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a gang sheet in Canva?

Yes. Use a custom size in inches, place your designs at print size, and download as PNG with a transparent background, which requires Canva Pro.

What size should a Canva gang sheet be?

Match your printer's sheet: usually 22 inches wide in the US, with a length such as 24, 36 or 60 inches.

Is Canva good for DTF printing?

For designing, yes. For preparing print files, it lacks resolution checks, edge cleanup and transparency control beyond the export option, so check files before printing.

How do I get a transparent background in Canva?

With Canva Pro: Share, Download, PNG, and tick "Transparent background". The free plan cannot export transparent PNGs.

Why is my Canva gang sheet blurry when printed?

The images on it are too small for the size you set. Canva does not warn about this. Use larger originals, print smaller, or upscale the artwork first.
